Happenings
The big news this week comes all the way from Mount Snow, Vermont, where the USA Cycling National Championships were held over the weekend of July 18-20. After taking the Beginner title last year (also at Mount Snow) Cool Cycling Club vice president Tom Judy stepped up to Sport for this year's race.
Earlier this year Tom enlisted the help of a personal trainer and competed in four events in California before heading east to Vermont. This year there were five other riders in the Sport men 40-49 category.
Tom came in third place, 15 seconds behind the leader in a tight race overall among the six contenders.
Great work, Tom! And welcome back. Next stop for Tom is NMBS Finals in Brian Head, Utah.
CCC Wish List
At a recent meeting Rich asked us to go around the table and present some ideas for a "wish list" for the club. The wish list is not limited to objects. It can also contain activities and ideas. By presenting this list we hope to encourage people who may see something they have, or something they would like to do to step forward and provide their help.
Our wishes list is not limited to what you see here. Anybody who wants to add something can call me, John at 530-885-8661 or email me at the address at the bottom of the page. The more ideas the better. We'd like the synergy to build!

California events and centuries
July 26 Santa Cruz Mountains Challenge. 10000 feet of climbing in a hundred miles. This one's a doozy but if you finish you have bragging rights. 65 mile option also. Beautiful riding in the coastal redwoods.
August 2 Marin Century. Ramble on the roads of western Marin County. Maybe you'll see Levi Leipheimer out on a training ride. Maybe you'll catch him. Probably not.
August 3 Mount Shasta Summit Century. This ride has just about the greatest finale of any ride anywhere - 14 miles of 6% downhill grade! Of course you have to get up to the top first. Shorter and longer options available too.
August 16 Holstein Hundred, yet another ride in beautiful west Marin county. This ride is hosted by West Marin Senior Services and a portion of your entrance fee is tax deductible.
August 17 Tour of Napa Valley. Bring your swimsuit and take an after-ride dip in the pool at the Yountville Veteran's Home.
September 12-14, Folsom Cyclebration. First annual 3 day bike fest in nearby Folsom. Just about everything cycling - races, rides, expos, vendors and food. It looks like they are planning on routing their Gold Rush century up into our neck of the woods.
Of course there are many more rides near and far beyond what is listed here. See BikeCal, Big Brother Cycling, Cycle California and our own calendar. |
Racing
The Prairie City Wednesday evening race series has concluded for this year. The Fall Flash series starts up on August 20. This series of races is held at the Prairie City OHV Park. It's cheap, close by, well run, and challenging for all levels of riders. More info.
Also at Northstar this summer catch the DH and XC races. Cross country races are held every Thursday from July 10 to August 21. DH races are July 20, August 10, September 14 and October 5. This year and past two years results on racing page. |
Community outreach projects
Saturday April 5 was the final work day for our RecycleBike project in its original form. We had excellent help from the crew at Greenwood California Conservation Corp in refurbishing most of our remaining inventory. The Bicycle Kitchen from Sacramento came up and removed everything else. During the year the club will be investigating alternative methods of helping get bikes into the hands of children, such as fundraisers for new bikes, or handing over the program to other agencies such as the California Conservation Corps. Thanks to all who helped along the way!
